The project was completed on time and the progress was almost according to plan. The entire project was 46 month and divided in 3 main periods.
1st Period, month 1-18, is 1st January 2012 - 30th June 2013.
2nd Period, month 19-36, is 1st July 2013 - 31st December 2014
3rd Period, month 37-46, is 1st January 2015 - 31st December 2015
First periodic results showed improved performance on a component level. Based on these results, concept simulation showed a good potential to reach the project target. In the second period improved fuel efficiency was obtained in all sub-projects. Engine tests showed results close to the target for the engine platform. In the two horizontal projects, EATS and friction reduction, improved novel hardware were tested and achieved results were in the target range. In the third period the integration of the engine concepts were completed. Performance and optimisation tests were conducted. The CORE results was demonstrated in applied duty cycles. The best experimentally achieved result was 13% reduced CO2, demonstrated on an CORE engine at EURO VI compared to an engine at EURO V legislation levels.
Taking into account the recalibration of a EURO V engine to EURO VI emission legislation and combined CORE technologies, vehicle simulations show four different powertrain concepts with CO2 reductions in the target zone of 11-18% compared to current EUROVI engined vehicles.
The results show that the CORE project reached its targets and has highlighted achievable path ways for CO2 reduction for long haul commercial vehicle applications.
